The 14th annual Desert Bus for Hope, Desert Bus for Hope 2020, started at 10 AM Pacific Standard Time on Friday, the 13th of November 2020.[1]

Owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, the event abandoned its usual everybody-in-one-room approach; instead, it brought together people broadcasting from a variety of locations.

Each of the four shifts was a separate production with its own engineering team. Each drove its own bus, which was run as a cloud emulation of a Sega CD system. The game run was suspended at the end of each shift, and picked up again at the start of that shift the next day.

Drivers

All shifts (except the starting and ending shifts) are 6 hours long, at least officially. Times below are in 24-hour time format, set to Pacific Standard Time. The stats below ignore shifts starting late for purposes of tracking donations; bus stats follow which cloud-based bus is being driven.

Notable Events and Memes

On Sept. 26, Rustproof Bee Shed, definitely not a Desert Bus test stream, aired for about six hours on the LRR Twitch channel, spanning two shifts: Beta Flight and Dusk Guard. During that time, it raised $11,759.90 for Trans Lifeline. [2]

The Button this year consists of a virtual (software) button that triggers a mechanical finger pushing an actual physical button, which in turn triggers a Random Dance Party. [3]

The usual behind-the-scenes photography by Kolin is impossible this time around. Instead, participants are taking their own photos, and they're soliciting photos from viewers. Those can be submitted at https://yourphotos.desertbus.org

It was believed that the cloud bus controls mapped Z to the brake, X to the door handle, and V to the accelerator. Or, in other words, [Z]top, e[X]it, and [V]room. It was later determined that Z and X had the opposite of those functions.

Night Watch kicked off with a news report every night.

Ben did a reading from Escape from Tenopia #2: Trapped in the Sea Kingdom, by Edward Packard, the OG Choose Your Own Adventure writer who lost the trademark. On page 13, you encounter Belopa. He's a pelephin, a telepathic dolphin-like creature. [4]

Coffee Pong

James and Serge once again had a series of Coffee Pong matches during Dawn Guard. Each day's was conducted in a different manner.
