This page deals with cards from the game Settlers of Catan as they pertain to the rules of Viking Secret Wildcard Poker.

Overview

Settlers of Catan resource cards are gathered by players into their 'Warehouse' to be spent in later hands to increase their multiplier. Different combinations of cards result in different multipliers.

Card Descriptions

The five resource card types from Settlers of Catan can be used in VSWP. The Development cards are not currently used, but rules may be written at a later date.

  • Resource card types:
    • Wheat
    • Wood
    • Stone
    • Clay
    • Sheep

Setup

The resource cards are shuffled into the general deck by the dealer at the beginning of the game.

Rules

The Warehouse

When the Settlers of Catan resource cards are in play, each player has a 'Warehouse' in addition to their hand. The Warehouse is an area where the player can store resource cards by placing them face up on the table in front of them. Cards in the Warehouse remain there between hands until the player uses them to form a Catan Multiplier (CM) or they are removed by another rule (see below).

Resource cards are used in three different ways, depending on where they appear in the round:

  1. Dealt to a player as one of his Pit cards:
    • The player declares the card immediately, before betting takes place.
    • The resource card is removed from the player's hand and placed in his Warehouse.
    • The dealer deals another card to the player to replace the resource card in the Pit. If this new card is also a resource card, the process is repeated.
  2. Dealt as either the Knuckle card or in the Flaps:
    • Any player may count the resource card as part of his CM.
    • Cards from the player's Warehouse are still discarded when a CM is played, but any in the community remain, and can be used by more than one player (as is expected from a community card).
  3. Dealt as the Pants card:
    • All players must discard any resource cards in their Warehouse of the same type as the Pants card. The dealer then discards the Pants and draws another card to replace it. If the new card is also a resource card, the process is repeated.

Combos

Resource cards are used to give a player's hand an extra multiplier in a round. The multiplier is officially called a Catan Multiplier or CM for short.

The following combinations of resource cards can be used to increase the value of a player's hand:

Name Cards Required Effect
Road 1x Clay 2x multiplier to the player's hand for that round
1x Wood
Settlement 1x Clay 4x multiplier to the player's hand for that round
1x Wood
1x Sheep
1x Wheat
City 2x Wheat 8x multiplier to the player's hand for that round
3x Rock

If a player wishes to play a combo, he must declare that he is doing so immediately after checking or raising, before the next player bets. Any resource cards in the player's Warehouse used in the combo are pushed forward or otherwise marked so that they can be identified. However, the CM is only applied if those cards are still in play after the Pants card is played. If the combo is rendered unplayable (for example if one of the resources required appears as the Pants card) then the remaining cards in the combo are lost, and do not return to the player's Warehouse.

Only one combo can be in effect on a hand at a time. Combos may not be withdrawn after they have been declared. The exception to this rule is is the player wishes to play a combo with a higher multiplier after a subsequent bet. In this case, the cards from the old combo are returned to the Warehouse and replaced with the new one.

Trading

Trading of cards in the Warehouse may take place between players, but only between hands. The dealer may choose to set a time limit on trading. There are no restrictions on the number of cards that must be traded, and uneven trades are allowed (e.g. 1 wood for 2 clay). However, only resource cards may be included in the trades, players may not buy cards from one another with chips or other betting items.

  • If any player utters the phrase "I have Wood for your Sheep" during trading, that player must sit out the next hand. This is known as a 'Flock Block'.
