Synopsis
The crew prepares for the M14 prerelease in a variety of ways. Kathleen attempts to tutor Cam and Graham on the cards with the aid of a chalkboard in a UVic classroom, though she has limited success because Graham is bored by anything except green rares and Cam is angry about the perceived injustice of the various planeswalkers not being "allowed" to have whatever minions and companions they desire. Alex and Paul memorize the card names through elaborate word games, but they neglect to pay attention to the actual effects of the cards. James performs a special "prerelease eve ritual" which mainly consists of him "watching Clerks and falling asleep in a bowl of popcorn".
The crew attends the prerelease event at Yellowjacket the next day, which consists of a 6-pack sealed event. Alex has opened "a bunch of stuff" (including two planeswalkers) and plans to play five-color good stuff. Paul is initially disappointed with his pool, but receives aid from another player. Cam opens a fantastic green deck, but as he has no idea how to play with the color, he is distraught. Kathleen, who has spent the episode proclaiming the virtues of UB control, her typical archetype, ends up giving up her moral convictions in favor of the red-green deck she opens. James, who has no idea what any of the cards do, nevertheless opens an unbelievably good blue pool (including two Jaces). Graham attempts to create a new archetype by only playing two-drops, calling the deck "BearForce One".
At the conclusion of the prerelease, Kathleen has won, Cam has lost completely, and Graham has simply done alright. The crew looks ahead to the upcoming Gran Prix in Calgary.
