Synopsis

Graham, Tally, Jer, Matt, Cam, Kathleen, Alex, James, and Paul have gathered at the Moonbase for "Unsanctioned Draft Day". Jer is the organizer and judge, and the remaining eight have divided up into four teams, each representing a guild:

  • Graham and Tally are Selesnyan (Green-White). They didn't know they needed a team name.
  • Paul and Alex are Gruul (Red-Green). Their team name is "The Barbary Bros."
  • Cam and Kathleen claim to be Simic (Green-Blue). Their team name is "Team Do the Evolution: Now with 60% More Frog."
  • Matt and Jer are Orzhov (Black-White). Their team name is "The Extortion Racket."

Each team is wearing colors representing their guild, except for Matt (who is busy with schoolwork and didn't have the time to dress appropriately) and Cam and Kathleen (who are wearing blue and black, though Cam is wearing a hastily pulled-over green sweater).

Cam and Kathleen are disqualified when they suddenly reveal that they are Dimir instead of Simic and begin playing cards from outside the draft, claiming that they are "in-flavor" with their guild for being deceptive. Graham and Tally go down quickly when it becomes apparent that Tally hasn't played Magic since grade school and is not used to the new structure and balancing of the game. Despite Matt's attempts to throw the draft so that he can leave and return to his studies, he finds himself in the final round against Alex. He suggests that they declare a draw, thus ending faster, offering a couple of his prize packs to Alex as an incentive. James disqualifies them, claiming that they are engaging in "collusion". According to the tournament rules (set by James himself), the organizer (James) "retains" the prizes that would otherwise be given to disqualified players, meaning that he keeps a large stack of packs.
